Semrock – SearchLight™ Mobile Application for IPad

Semrock Corporation, a business unit of IDEX Health & Science, has become the standard in optical filters for the life science industry, applying patented design techniques to create some of the most spectrally sophisticated optical filters on the market.

Semrock has an existing user tool on their website whereby someone can put in characteristics of the test bench they are studying and the tool helps them to select the best products for their application.  Key users of the online tool were asking for Semrock to provide a mobile app that would allow them to access and use it while out in the field or offline.

With the majority of their distributor user base being iPad users, Semrock selected Envative to create an iOS mobile app knowing that we were experts in the platform. Envative then designed tablet-friendly wireframes that replicated the functionality of the online web tool while working closely with Semrock to further flesh out requirements and features. Bi-weekly sprint meetings took place so that Semrock could watch progress and provide feedback throughout the development cycle.

The end result of the project is the SearchLight™ mobile app which provides an interactive tool allowing users to select specifications such as fluorophores, filters, light sources and detectors to evaluate the performance of a prospective fluorescence instrument design. The app was originally targeted for use on iPad but was quickly followed by a request for phone version based on it's popularity with the audience.  The UI/UX was adjusted to accommodate the smaller screens for the iPhone. Both versions of the app are currently available to Semrock distributors in the iTunes store.  Plans for an Android version are on the horizon.
